Dorian Grey Gallery Limited Edition

Price: $200.00

James (Jim) Flora is best known for his wild 1940s-50s jazz album covers for Columbia Records and RCA Victor. He wrote and illustrated 17 popular children's books and flourished for decades as a magazine illustrator. Flora was also prolific as a fine artist with a devilish sense of humor and a flair for juxtaposing playfulness with absurd action.

In commemoration of the 60 year retrospective of Flora’s work at the Dorian Grey Gallery, the estate has produce a limited edition print based on the 1950’s album cover for Shorty Rogers.

Gene Krupa

Price: $200.00

Jim Flora Art LLC has released a limited-edition, archival-quality fine art print of a classic Jim Flora album cover illustration. Gene Krupa and His Orchestra was released on Columbia Records in 1947 on a 78 rpm four-disc set. Krupa (1909-1973) was one of the premiere jazz drummers from the 1930s thru the 1950s--a brilliant player and master showman. He starred with the legendary Benny Goodman Orchestra in the late 1930s, and later fronted his own band featuring trumpeter Roy Eldridge and singer Anita O'Day. He was portrayed by Sal Mineo in the 1959 film The Gene Krupa Story, and in 1979 was the first inductee to the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.

Louis Armstrong, Hot 5

Price: $650.00

The Original artwork for Armstrong's Hot 5 no longer exists so this is an extra-exciting edition, created from a well-preserved printer's proof in the family archives and uniquely signed by Jim Flora's son Joel.

The album was a reissue of 1920s material. The 78 set was part of Columbia's "Hot Jazz Series," for which Flora also designed covers for albums featuring early sides by Gene Krupa, Jimmy Dorsey, Sidney Bechet, Bix & Tram, and Kid Ory. The album was released in 1947 and Joel Flora, the artist's son who signed the prints, was born the same year.

Flora was no longer art director when he did this cover. He had been promoted to advertising manager in 1945, and then sales promotion manager before resigning from the company in 1950 and moving to Mexico. The AD in 1947 was Robert M. Jones, a legendary album and book cover designer and art director, who was a friend of Flora from their first meeting in 1945 to RMJ's death in 1992.

Pete Jolly Duo

Price: $150.00

Jazz pianist Pete Jolly was a prolific TV and film soundtrack composer. But in our world, he's a pulsating, hyperkinetic hepcat who was twice caricatured by Jim Flora on RCA Victor album covers.

Following the success of our Mambo for Cats screen print, we're introducing a new work to our growing line of iconic Jim Flora replicas: a screen print of the artist's swirly 1955 EP cover for the Pete Jolly Duo. This sleeve rarely turns up on eBay, and fetches big bids when it does.

The Incredible Flutist

Price: $200.00

Jim Flora Art LLC has released a limited-edition, archival-quality fine art print of an uncirculated 1953-54 record cover illustration by Jim Flora. The illustration was intended for a 7-inch extended-play (EP) record release entitled The Incredible Flutist/Les Patineurs. According to a purchase order discovered in the Flora archives, the work was commissioned by RCA Victor in late 1953. However, there is no indication that the work was ever finished, accepted, or used on a commercially released EP. (The Incredible Flutist was a ballet suite composed by Walter Piston, and the waltz Les Patineurs was composed by Emile Waldteufel.)

This is Benny Goodman

Price: $200.00

Jim Flora Art LLC has released a limited-edition, archival-quality fine art print of a rejected 1955 record cover illustration by Jim Flora. The work was commissioned for a 10-inch record release entitled This Is Benny Goodman. However, the work was rejected by RCA in favor of a different Flora cover illustration. This version was never completed or used on any commercially released album. It was reproduced in The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora, along with the commercially approved illustration. (We are not offering a print of the latter work.)
